Gabon is relaunching the sector through the distribution of agricultural kits, including sprayers and pesticides, to the cooperatives of the “Young coffee - cocoa entrepreneurs (Jecca)” program in the provinces of Haut-Ogooué and Ogooué-Lolo.
This, 41 years after the drastic drop in cocoa production, divided by 120 from more than 6,000 tons to only 53 tons. The objective of this revitalization is to reach 3,000 tonnes within five years. Launched three years ago, the Jecca project has enabled the creation of 409 hectares of cocoa trees. The objective is to plant 1,000 hectares of cocoa trees by 2025 to prevent the rural exodus of 1,000 young people.
In this new impetus, two major obstacles stand in the way of producers, namely access to financing and land. Banks are still dragging their feet despite the guarantees offered, particularly on land.
